Each leg of the Arch was designed as an equilateral triangle, with sides 54-feet wide at ground level. Nearly 26,000 tons of concrete was poured into the foundation and when completed, the first stainless steel sections were mounted and the Arch began its ascent skyward. Workers had to use extreme caution when working on the legs, to protect the gleaming surface of the outer wall.
